Is your skin feeling dry? Dry skin is a very common condition, especially in older people. However, we have seen even younger people with dry skin which tends to be a hereditary condition. For most people, dry skin is the result of incorrect skin care and environmental damage.

 

What does a dry skin look like?

 

Dry skin often has a dull appearance, a rough texture, and crinkled appearance. Dry skin does not hold onto moisture well so it's also dehydrated. Dehydrated dry skin tends to age faster and could also have secondary complications such as itching, sensitivity, and rashes.

 

What is the cause of skin dryness?

 

Dry skin is the result of depleted lipids in the skin. The skin needs essential fatty acids, cholesterol, and ceramides in order to hold onto moisture more effectively to lubricate the skin and to keep it soft and supple. People on low-fat diets tend to have dry skin because they're not consuming enough essential fatty acids to lubricate the skin from the inside. As we get older hormonal changes can also affect the number of lipids we have in a skin causing the skin to dry out.

 

Which vitamin deficiency causes dry skin?

 

Vitamins essential to keep the skin lubricated from the inside include essential fatty acids Omega 3 6 9,  vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin K. Dry skin can be the result of any number of these vitamin deficiencies. A blood test will indicate where the deficiencies are.

 

How to fix a dry skin at home

 

If you're experiencing dry skin you can easily provide relief at home. First, make sure the cleanser you use for your skin is a milky or creamy base. Gel or foaming cleansers and soaps will strip the skin causing your skin to dry out so avoid soaps and detergent-based cleanser that foam up. Moisturise your skin with a cream based on essential fatty acids, ceramides and lipid-based vitamins such as vitamin E and vitamin A. In winter you may need to supplement your cream with an oil serum to ensure your skin stays soft and supple.

Hydration is the key to a youthful and healthy skin. If you find your skin starts to feel tight, dry, uncomfortable, dull looking, with fine lines and wrinkles, you are most likely experiencing the first signs of dehydration. If not taken care of, this can lead to premature ageing or even skin sensitivities.

 

Dehydration in the skin can occur due to seasonal changes, travelling, working in air-conditioned environment, poor product choices or neglecting your skin. Keeping your skin hydrated is not hard, it just a matter of using the right products on your skin and using them consistently.

 

Keep your skin hydrated with these quick and easy beauty tips:

 

1. Drinking water will help to rehydrate your skin from the inside out, so drink spring water or mineral water for added skin benefits

2. Choosing foods that are high in water content will also help to keep your skin hydrated. Fruit such as watermelon are high in water content, and vegetables such as celery and cucumber are good choices also. Drink herbal tea and green vegetable juices. Yoghurt and soups are also high in water content so great for snacks or for light meals.  

3. Make sure you are using a quality cleanser suited for your skin type. A harsh cleanser will strip your skin and cause it to dehydrate. Opt for creamy or milky based cleansers and avoid foaming cleansers which are too harsh for the skin.
